170.Gold Coast (YBCG)

We had a great flight up from Sydney to Port Macquarie. We got really lucky with good weather. Weather should remain relatively good for Day 170. Maybe some area's of broken or overcast skies. We're headed up to Gold Coast for today. Gold Coast is a coastal city located in the southeastern corner of the state of Queensland, Australia. It is known for its golden sandy beaches, subtropical climate, and a wide range of attractions and activities. Visitors can enjoy surfing, swimming, and sunbathing on the famous Surfers Paradise Beach, explore the lush hinterland, and experience the vibrant nightlife. The Gold Coast also boasts several theme parks, including Dreamworld and Movie World, which offer a variety of rides and shows. Other popular attractions include the Q1 skyscraper, the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk, and the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. 171.Hervey Bay (YHBA)

Over the next few flights we'll be enjoying the sights of the east coast of Australia. Our destination for day 171 is Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay is a coastal city located in the state of Queensland, Australia. It is known for its calm waters and beautiful beaches, making it a popular destination for swimming and fishing. One of the main attractions of Hervey Bay is the chance to see humpback whales on their annual migration from June to November. Visitors can take a whale watching tour and get up close to these magnificent creatures. Hervey Bay is also a gateway to the world-renowned Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. Hervey Bay is a great destination for those looking to experience the best of coastal Queensland.

172.Shoalwater Bay (YSMH)

Shoalwater Bay is a stunning coastal region located in Queensland, Australia. It is renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and diverse marine life. The area is home to the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area, which encompasses vast expanses of rugged terrain and wetlands. 173.Shute Harbour (YSHR)

174.Dunk Island (YDKI)

Dunk Island is a captivating tropical island located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in the Family Islands National Park. It is renowned for its pristine beaches, lush rainforest, and diverse marine life. Visitors can indulge in a range of activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking in the turquoise waters that surround the island. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the network of scenic trails that wind through the island's dense rainforest, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the Great Barrier Reef.

175.Lizard Island (YZLI)

Lizard Island is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, pristine beaches, and abundant marine life. The island offers an array of activities for visitors, including snorkeling, diving, and fishing in the vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, turtles, and rays. One of the island's highlights is the famous Cod Hole, a dive site known for encounters with large potato cod. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the island's trails and be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding turquoise waters. Lizard Island is also home to a luxury resort that provides a tranquil retreat for those seeking relaxation and indulgence in a remote setting.

176.Hicks Island (YHKI)

Amphibians may be preferred for our flight to Hicks Island. We'll be finally seeing some of the great barrier reef on our final day in Australia and a stop or two along the way wouldn't be a bad idea. Hicks Island is about 1KM southeast of Cape Grenville in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Queensland, Australia. Located in the Great Barrier Reef region, this Island offers a tropical retreat with direct access to northern airports and nearby attractions such as Haggiston Island Resort. The area offers abundant diving, fishing opportunities and friendly neighbors.

177.Daru (AYDU)

This marks the beginning of one of our most challenging destinations yet, as PNG boasts numerous remote communities that beckon exploration. While we could easily spend a significant amount of time discovering these communities, our goal to circumnavigate the world urges us to stay focused. Our destination for today is Daru, a vibrant town situated in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. Nestled on a small island at the mouth of the Fly River, Daru serves as a gateway to the awe-inspiring natural beauty and cultural richness of the region. Travelers have the opportunity to venture into traditional coastal villages, immersing themselves in the captivating customs and rituals of the local people. With its captivating cultural heritage, breathtaking surroundings, and an abundance of natural wonders, Daru promises an authentic and adventurous experience for those eager to explore the western part of Papua New Guinea.

178.Vailala (AYVA)

Vailala is a small airstrip located in Papua New Guinea, and while it may not have many attractions directly around the airstrip, it serves as a gateway to the surrounding areas, which offer unique and fascinating sights. The region is renowned for its lush rainforests, rich cultural heritage, and traditional villages. Visitors can embark on jungle treks to discover the diverse flora and fauna, with the possibility of encountering various bird species and other wildlife. The local communities offer a chance to experience authentic Papua New Guinean culture, witnessing traditional dances, ceremonies, and craftsmanship. Additionally, the nearby rivers and waterways provide opportunities for scenic boat trips, fishing excursions, and river exploration. As Vailala is a remote location, it allows travelers to truly immerse themselves in the untouched beauty of Papua New Guinea, offering an authentic and off-the-beaten-path adventure.

179.Port Moresby (AYPY)

We are tackling some very short mountain strips. So this time I would not recommend the C208. Kodiak, PC6, Twin Otter should all be effective. We're making it to our starting point for PNG exploration, Port Moresby. Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea, offers a mix of cultural experiences, natural wonders, and historical sites. Nature enthusiasts can explore the nearby Varirata National Park, known for its scenic views and diverse birdlife. A visit to the Port Moresby Nature Park allows encounters with Papua New Guinea's unique wildlife, including tree kangaroos and birds of paradise. Adventure seekers can hike up the Paga Hill for panoramic views of the city and the harbor. While Port Moresby has a reputation for safety concerns, exercising caution and exploring the city's attractions can provide a rewarding experience rich in cultural discoveries and natural beauty.
